    Great point! The only difference being that in a market place you get to choose what corporation you want “services” from.

    The context of which is “moneylenders” burdening the people with debt and those selling animals for sacrifice when you read the John passage.Also the specific retort in all passages is “don’t make my Lord’s house a market place”. Meaning don’t do business there. It certainly is not the rebuke of capitalism you want it to be. Capitalism in different forms has been around before written history-including that of the bible. What Jesus doesn’t say is “Don’t have marketplaces” at all-just not there.

  8. I know in my city (in Canada) You can be fined for not having a working smoke detector if they are called out to put out a minor fire where no substantial damage has occurred. It is a tool for them to use to ensure that city residents replace batteries. The fine is completely discretionary and is there as a stick to ensure safety compliance. Every time a fine is issued it will be reported to the newspaper…. sans personal info.

    B/c fires spread and could possibly burn down entire communities if not put out. Would you want you house to burn down b/c the guy next to you didn’t have insurance even though you did? See how that doesn’t make any sense and its sensible to pay for the fire department through taxes.

    Now I understand why Christians get so frustrated with people taking verses out of context-youre a prime example. For a fuller description of what happened go to John 2:13-16. In it youll see it wasnt just dove sellers but those selling cattle as well. Why is this relevant? You think is a rebuke of capitalism. It is actually a rebuke of the practice of sacrificial offerings. He had just warned earlier not to sacrifice the blood of innocents yet they continued to do so. Nice try though.
