Are You Overwhelmed With Credit Card Debt?

There are many people in the U.S. and no doubt worldwide that are overwhelmed with credit card debt, most of whom are only paying their minimum payment amounts every month and who feel as if they’ll never get out from under their debts.  It certainly is true that if you only pay the minimum amount due every month you can be paying only the interest on your credit card debt and are not making any progress toward the principle, or the actual amount owed.  This means that it can years and years to pay down that amount, if it ever gets paid at all. One thing that a person can do when facing credit card debt is to get themselves organized and set up a budget for the family.  Too often people spend whatever they want, whenever they want, and give little thought as to where their money is actually going.  This means that at the end of the month there really isn’t anything left over to put toward that credit card debt, but far too much money has been spent on needless items for the home, clothes you don’t really need, and other unnecessary items.  If you get organized and really keep track of your spending and work up a reasonable budget for yourself, and pay your credit cards as you pay your other bills such as rent and utilities, you may see that you really do have more money than you thought to use for these debts.  It also helps to pay more than the minimum amount due every month when it comes to your credit card debt; even if it’s just ten or twenty dollars, when you pay more than the minimum you’ll be putting more and more toward the principle due and won’t be paying on just the interest.

Of course many people make their credit card debt even worse by continuing to rack up charges on their account, but this too is a serious mistake.  Adding more charges just means that it will take longer to pay down the debt.  If you need to charge something on your card every month, it’s time to consider your spending habits and your income.  You might realize that you need to cut back on dining out, clothes, accessories for the home, and things such as these.  And if you’re adding to your credit card debt by charging basic necessities such as groceries, you may need to consider supplementing your income with a second job since your first job obviously just isn’t paying you enough.  Or you might need to consider paring down your major expenses by moving into a more affordable home or trading in your luxury car for something less expensive.  This way you’ll have more money for your basic necessities and to use toward your credit card debt as well.  Remember that the more you pay on your credit card debt the sooner you’ll be rid of it and will be healthier financially.
